I, like you, didn't trust my sense of the first novel, but really loved it. So much so that I immediately dove into the second and am nearly finished. It is, perhaps, not nearly as polished as the first, but is - in its continuity of story-telling - wonderful in the illumination of characters who first appeared in the previous novel. There is so much here to love: West's wit, insight, flights of fancy, and incredible penetration into a scene and what makes relationships so memorable. I sincerely hope you find your way back to this wonderful author. What makes her so special? It's the meandering narrative, the incredibly long and involved paragraphs, and the fading between chapters - invisible fading, as though one is arriving into the scenes from the wallpaper, and leaving by the baseboards. It's so different from what is being written today, with no sense of 'framing for cinema." Perhaps that's why, more than fifty years later, this wonderful author has never had a film created (to my knowledge) of these semi-autobiographical works.
It's like finding literature again.
Thanks for your wonderful review.Tom Stockwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18085259445174851022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6137320920765013089.post-10869446410835121512011-10-02T04:02:08.597-04:002011-10-02T04:02:08.597-04:00Nice little blog on your X recollections. Then, like now - boys liked girls with curves whatever fashion's dictates. Just look at all of Alfred Cheney Johnston's photos from the 20s. They look far more like Leyendecker's picture than otherwise.

The word flapper is a little strange - in the first couple of decades of the 20th century it just meant a teen who had not yet put her hair up, i.e. she would have a long pony tail or braid that would flap up and down. Fitzgerald gave it its popular 20s meaning, i.e. a young girl in her teens or 20s who went to dances and cut her hair and otherwise embodied modern conventions. Body type was much less a concern- aside from the obvious one of being freed from the tyranny of the corset.Cavigliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11282497659818304112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6137320920765013089.post-80387900886570362672011-05-27T16:21:52.134-04:002011-05-27T16:21:52.134-04:00I was thinking, like, 1920s Flapper, with the narr...I was thinking, like, 1920s Flapper, with the narrow hips and the narrow hem and stuff.
